E-commerce: the catalogue before checkout

Categories, product data, availability and search shape how easily people find the right choice.

Checkout gets a lot of attention when an online store is planned. But people first need to find a product, understand its details and know whether they can buy it. If the catalogue is confusing, improving the final step does not solve the main problem.

01 / Structure around how people search

An internal product hierarchy does not always match the words customers use. Look at real enquiries and separate categories, filters and attributes. A clear structure helps both people who know the product and those still comparing options.

02 / Reliable product pages

Names, descriptions, images, variants and technical data need to be consistent. When information comes from several suppliers, decide how to handle missing or conflicting values and who approves corrections. Data quality is more than an import task: it directly affects search and comparison.

03 / Stock and prices need a source

A displayed price and a promise of availability need clear rules. Define which system provides them, when they update and what appears if synchronization stops. The purchase journey should reflect the real state of the catalogue.

04 / Test search with real cases

Useful search handles names, codes and terms people actually use. Filters should narrow options without hiding relevant products. Before launch, testing specific searches and comparisons tells you more than checking whether the search field responds.

05 / The work continues after the order

Payment, confirmation, fulfilment, returns and support belong to the same experience. The project should clarify what information moves between systems and people, how exceptions are handled and who steps in when an order needs attention.

TAKE INTO YOUR PROJECT

Three questions to answer.

  1. Do categories match the words customers use?
  2. Who verifies product pages, prices and availability?
  3. Which searches and purchases will we test before launch?
